Alexis Williams is an artist working with timber. His practice is spontaneous, intuitive, and conceptual, balancing function and form through experimentation. In the sculpting process, he is driven by the inherent character of timber and fascinated by the elemental exchange with open flame.
Williams approaches making work with openness and engages in a visceral rhythm, revealing subtle nuances and characteristics of the wood. He finesses the work with an instinctual intensity which is crucial to his oeuvre. The finished form is often an ambiguous anthropomorphic functional object that can shift the mood and experience of a space.
Williams is based in Northern NSW and works from his studio in Skinner’s Shoot, Byron Bay. In 2018, he graduated from RMIT Melbourne with an Associate Degree in Design, Furniture Major. Williams has since specialised in private and commercial commissions. The development of his work is often collaborative, and he has worked with other creatives and clients in Northern NSW, Sydney and Melbourne, such as Folk Architecture, Tigmi Trading, Fearon, St. Agni, Nagnata, and Lucy Folk. In 2019 he exhibited with Justin Williams, COMA Gallery, Sydney NSW, and continues to develop his exhibition practice. His work is held in private collections in Australia and internationally.
